The life-changing beauty and power of a story

Brandi Bates

“Learning language and the cadence and the beauty of a story from somebody you care for can do more to increase the skill of a child than literally anything else we can do for them.” (Anita Silvey, 2007)
When was the last time you sat in undisturbed quiet and read a story that took your breath away?
Oh, the life-changing beauty and power of a story! It is something every human on earth deserves and is made to experience. But sometimes the details and the work steal the beautiful view of the big picture from us: we can “miss the forest for the trees”. The work of teaching reading can cause us to lose sight of one of the big reasons we teach children to read in the first place: to become their own Story Collectors and Story Tellers.
If you are teaching reading without frequently reading aloud for pleasure, you are working too hard. Join Brandi Bates, founder of “Biblioteca Copiilor ‘Din Loc în Loc’” (Lupeni, HD) and leader of Citim Împreună România, for a lively discussion on why reading aloud for pleasure is invaluable for the child learning to read; how reading aloud for pleasure keeps us connected to “why” we teach children to read; how to graft reading aloud for pleasure into your daily routine; and why reading aloud for pleasure is especially important in rivaling Big Tech’s grab for our children in today’s attention economy.
Of course, there will be lots of Reading Together!
This workshop will be conducted in English.
